I Know Who You Are is sung by Robert to Chaz. The subtle implication is that "behind the veil of the song" Robert can confess his true impressions and feelings that he would be hesitant to say in normal conversation. This is a love song about knowing the ways you can get hurt as well as be loved in a relationship. He ponders whether it is all worth it. Roberts first impression is that he could fall in love with Chaz. The lyrics consider that it is up to each individuals level of trust and fear of losing that answers that question. I Hate em, I Love em A jazz hip-hop rhythm punctuates this song sung privately by Robert after the bar clears out and no one else is around. In it, he frets about not being able to find Mr. Right and that his window of opportunity is closing. All the while, hes dancing up a storm and letting out the "upbeat" part of himself that he never performs in public. Thats the Man for Me This song is in the torch-style motif that posits the question about who is the "ideal" man for Robert. The result is a description which is full of paradoxes. It is the opening song of Scene 2 in Act 1. Another Lesson Learned Sonia defends her honor and questions authority in this up-tempo dance number about learning from past experiences. Safe One of the two novelty songs in the play performed by Chaz. He is exasperated by the incessant need to practice safe sex and constantly being asked about it by well-meaning friends and family. Asking himself what this really means in the broader context, he expresses his disdain for the underlying judgments in this "soft shoe" number. Sonias Song After showing a tough exterior to the others, Sonia reflects in a private moment how everything is going wrong for her and how frightening it feels. The song is set to a soft bosa nova tempo. Victim This tango-style has Chaz taunting Robert for behaving like a "classic victim". This is likely the funniest number in the show with whimsical lyrics, slapstick-style dancing. The Finer Things Sonia and Robert muse about their parents expectations for them and how that has shaped their self images. It is a beautiful ballad and duet that is the precursor to the discovery that Chaz has been exposed to HIV. You Wanna Get Lucky A decidedly upbeat and different-looking Robert opens Act II. He is transformed and the music shows that. His opening song is a swing number with a suggestive lyric about carefree romance. What Happens Now? Chaz has a private moment in the alley behind the bar after he and Robert fight. There he sings about what may become of him now that he is HIV positive. It is, by far, the most tender moment in the show. It Is I The final song is about becoming truly self aware of ones potential and the opportunity to effect change in ones own life. Robert finally becomes aware that hes been "hiding out", that his potential has been shirked, sacrificing his enjoyment of life. This is his declaration of change and the climax of the show.
